HLTMSG011 Provide massage treatments
Core unit of HLT42021 Certificate IV in Massage Therapy. Release 1.
This is the core hands-on massage unit. You learn to prepare yourself, the room and the client, apply the standard relaxation techniques safely in different positions, monitor the client and give aftercare advice. Remedial techniques are not included.

What you must do (performance evidence)
- Prepare for and deliver at least 2 full-body massages on different people, each with at least 60 minutes of hands-on time.
- Use compressions, effleurage, friction, gliding strokes, petrissage, rocking and tapotement.
What you must know (knowledge evidence)
- Legal and ethical duties, including scope of practice, discrimination, consent and referral.
- Relaxation massage as stress management.
- How to apply each technique in supine, prone, side-lying and seated positions.
- Endangerment sites: anterior triangle of the neck, axilla, abdomen, femoral triangle, popliteal fossa.
- Client reactions during treatment (pain, allergy, emotion, spasm, autonomic responses, sleep) and after treatment (blood pressure, parasympathetic effects).
- Preparing the client (draping, modesty, positioning, bolstering) and the room (hygiene, table height, temperature, lighting, privacy).
- Preparing yourself: PPE, hydration, hygiene, nails, hair, attire.
- Monitoring progress and documenting treatment.
How it is assessed
Simulated clinic with massage table, draping, oils and bolsters; assessors must be practising remedial/myotherapy/soft tissue therapists.
