HLTMSG012 Apply relaxation massage clinical practice

Core unit of HLT42021 Certificate IV in Massage Therapy. Release 1.

This is the clinical placement unit that brings the course together. You run real relaxation massage consultations for members of the public under supervision and build your professional practice.

What you must do (performance evidence)

• Complete at least 80 hours of massage clinic work.
• At least 40 of those hours must be relaxation massage consultations (assessment and treatment), directly observed face-to-face by the assessor, using compressions, effleurage, friction, gliding strokes, petrissage, rocking and tapotement.
• Treat clients from different stages of life with varied presentations.

What you must know (knowledge evidence)

• Legal and ethical duties, including scope of practice and referral.
• Case history, client expectations, and client, room and self preparation protocols.
• Expected outcomes for different conditions and client groups, and what affects them (contraindications, general health, health literacy, other treatments).
• Cautions, contraindications and referral options (allied health, medical, support services).
• Recommending and documenting ongoing treatment.
• Research and evidence supporting massage.
• Clinical documentation: client records, assessment reports, treatment plans, insurance documents, statements of attendance.
• Professional development requirements.

How it is assessed

Simulated clinic open to the general public, with on-campus in-person clinic supervision; assessors must be practising remedial/myotherapy/soft tissue therapists.
