8 Petrissage Techniques you NEED to know

A sports massage tutor demonstrates eight petrissage variations, each with its own chapter: palmar kneading, thumb kneading, skin rolling, wringing, criss-cross lifting, squeezing, knuckling and compressions. She notes where on the body each works best and how to spare your thumbs.

Key points

  • Petrissage lifts and moves the tissue more than effleurage, so do it after effleurage.
  • Palmar kneading picks up and squeezes with the whole hand; it suits the upper trapezius.
  • Keep thumb kneading for small areas (back of the neck, palm, sole) so you do not overload your thumbs.
  • Skin rolling works best with little or no lotion and suits areas such as over the shoulder blade.
  • Wringing and whole-hand kneading suit the calf, where the muscle fits in your hand.

Cautions

  • Comments about loosening adhesions and scar tissue are the presenter’s view and not evidence-graded here.
