Find it
- Client seated or supine with the elbow bent to about 90°.
- Feel the point of the elbow at the back: the large bony tip is the olecranon.
- Straighten the elbow and feel the olecranon move up into the hollow at the back of the humerus (the olecranon fossa).
- Confirm by asking the client to straighten the elbow against light resistance: the triceps tendon tightens just above the olecranon.
Triceps brachii inserts on the upper surface of the olecranon. Anconeus attaches to its outer side, and part of flexor carpi ulnaris arises from its inner border.
The back of the olecranon sits just under the skin with a bursa over it, so avoid heavy pressure on the point of the elbow.
