A chiropractor explains and demonstrates cross-fibre friction on the common wrist extensor tendon at the elbow and on a hand tendon. He shows how to stroke at 90 degrees to the fibres with a supported finger, moving the skin with the finger rather than rubbing over it.
Cross friction massage (TENDONITIS, ADHESIONS, SCAR TISSUE) · Adam J. Story, DC · YouTube
Identify the structure and which way its fibres run, then work at right angles to them.
Use a middle finger supported by the index finger.
The finger and skin move together; do not slide over the skin or leave friction burns.
Sessions of a few minutes are typical; discomfort usually eases after the first minute or so.
Cautions
The video makes treatment claims about tendinitis and scar tissue; in massage, describe the technique as something clients commonly report helps rather than a cure.
Increasing pressure once the area goes numb is a clinical decision beyond Cert IV relaxation massage.
