Compressive Broadening (Fulling)

A massage instructor demonstrates compressive broadening, also called fulling, on the leg and back, and adds wringing. Both thenar eminences sit side by side on top of the muscle with the fingers wrapped around, and the whole hand sinks in and spreads outwards using body weight from an archer stance.

Key points

  • Prepare the area first with effleurage and petrissage.
  • Place the thenar eminences (the thumb pads) together, fingers on the far side of the limb.
  • The whole hand moves, not just the thumbs; sink in with body weight, then spread the tissue apart.
  • Work up the limb in overlapping steps, then flush with effleurage.
  • Keep spare cream on the back of your forearm so you can top up without stopping.

Cautions

  • At 15 minutes it is long for one stroke; the core technique is shown in the first five minutes.
