Massage to the Lower Leg - Superficial Frictions and Stripping

The founder of a UK massage training provider demonstrates stripping and three types of superficial friction on tibialis anterior, at the front of the shin. She applies the medium with effleurage, then shows stripping with the thumbs, then longitudinal, circular and transverse frictions, flushing with effleurage between each one.

Key points

  • Always warm the area first with effleurage (and petrissage) before frictions or stripping.
  • Stripping here uses both thumbs pressing slowly along the muscle beside the shin bone, 3–6 passes.
  • Circular frictions use the fingertips in small circles while the other hand steadies the leg.
  • Transverse frictions move the thumbs in opposite directions across the muscle fibres.
  • Flush with effleurage after each technique, and ease off pressure over the knee.

Cautions

  • Check pressure often; the front of the shin can be sensitive and sits close to bone.
  • The video shows several techniques together for teaching; you would not normally use all of them in one treatment.
