Proper Body Mechanics Demonstration

A massage educator from the American Massage Therapy Association gives a short practical demonstration of body mechanics. He covers setting the table height, an asymmetric lunge stance, and leaning body weight into the client through stacked joints instead of pushing with the arms. He also shows how to work "uphill" into the body's contours so pressure is not wasted.

Key points

  • A starting rule for table height is about half your own height, then adjust to suit your build.
  • Face the direction of the stroke with feet, hips and shoulders lined up; the leg on the working-arm side goes forward.
  • Move pressure by shifting weight between the legs, not by using the back or shoulder muscles.
  • Keep the arm straight and the joints stacked so you can lean rather than push; a soft fist or forearm can be used the same way.
  • Stroke up into the “hills” of the body; bolsters can help create them.
