Find it

  1. Client side-lying with the top leg supported, or prone.
  2. Place your palm on the side of the hip, below the iliac crest and just in front of the buttock.
  3. Feel for a broad, firm, bony area under your palm.
  4. Confirm by rolling the leg in and out (prone with the knee bent works well): the trochanter turns under your hand.

Gluteus medius inserts on the outer surface, gluteus minimus on the front edge and piriformis on the upper border. On the inner side, obturator internus and the gemelli insert just above the trochanteric fossa, where obturator externus inserts. Vastus lateralis begins just below it.

The tendon of gluteus maximus slides over the trochanter on a bursa, so use broad pressure over the bone itself.
